School communication app

Communication between your school, its families and its students — in your school’s own app.

Announcements, conversations, homework, calendar and photos. Each school gets an app with its own name, colours and icon, and a server of its own.

What it does

What the school office, teachers, families and students do with it, every day.

Announcements

Notices from the school office and teachers to one or more groups, or to the whole school.

  • Attachments and drafts
  • Optional read confirmation, with a report of which families have confirmed
  • Edits are marked as such, and earlier versions are kept
A teacher writing an announcement to her class, with the option to ask families to confirm they have read it and to add a file.

Conversations

Each conversation is about one student, between their teachers and their family — and the student, unless the teacher leaves them out.

  • Teachers start them, and so can families and students, with their own teachers
  • Files can be attached
  • No group chats, and no messages between students or between families
A conversation between a teacher and a parent about the parent’s son.

Homework

Teachers set homework for a group with a due date, and students hand it in with files.

  • Late hand-ins are accepted and flagged
  • Written feedback, and a mark if the teacher wants one
  • Families see what their children see
A handed-in essay with the teacher’s feedback and a mark of 8.5.

Calendar

Dates for the whole school and events for each group, with homework due dates added automatically.

  • All-day or timed events, with a place and a description
  • An agenda of what is next, and a month view
  • A due date opens its homework
The calendar’s agenda: class photos, a parents’ meeting, a class trip and two homework due dates.

Photos (optional)

Class albums, and private albums that only a child’s family can see.

  • The school records each child’s photo consent, and a child can only be tagged where it allows
  • If consent is withdrawn, the photos the child is tagged in are hidden
  • Location and other hidden details are removed from every photo
A class photo album with nine photos.

Notifications

What is new reaches each person as a push notification on their phone and by email, in their own language. Push is included when the school’s deployment turns it on.

  • Email is on by default for families and off for students
  • Parents with several children see one feed, and a calendar, messages and homework they can filter by child
  • Unread conversations are marked in the app
A family’s messages: three conversations with teachers, one of them unread, and a count on the Messages tab.

Administration

A section for administrators inside the same app, made for a computer.

  • People and their roles, invited by email: nobody signs up on their own
  • Groups, classes and academic years
  • People and group memberships imported from a CSV file
  • Data retention: past years stay readable as archived, and are then deleted
Administration: the school’s people with their roles, filters by role and a button to invite someone.

Your school’s own app

Families install an app with your school’s name on it, not ours.

  • Your name, colours and icon

The app carries your school’s name and icon, and its whole colour scheme is built from your school’s colours, in light and dark mode.

  • Your address

The app talks to your school’s own domain, and the links in its emails open straight in the app.

  • Phones and computers

Apps for Android and iOS phones, and for Windows, macOS and Linux computers.

  • Spanish and English

Each person uses the app in their own language, and their emails arrive in it too.

Your school’s own server

Each school gets a deployment of its own, not a corner of a shared one.

  • One deployment per school

Your school has its own server and its own database. No other school shares them.

  • Your data, on your server

Announcements, messages, homework and files are stored on your school’s server. Passwords are never stored, only a hash of them.

  • Features chosen per school

Conversations, homework, marks, calendar, read confirmations, files and photos can each be switched on or off for your school.

  • Files are optional

Without attachments the server needs no file storage, which makes for a smaller deployment.

How it works

From the first demo to families using the app.

  1. Demo

Ask for a demo and see the app as the demo school uses it: as a family, as a teacher and as an administrator.

  2. Configuration

Your school’s name, colours, icon, domain and the features it wants, in a single configuration file.

  3. Deployment

Your school’s server is deployed: its database, its email and, if it uses files, its file storage.

  4. Apps published

The Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux apps are built with your school’s name, and staff, families and students are invited.
